About this work
Novak uses popular culture, specifically the depiction of celebrities from the hyper-inflated world of American stardom. Icons such as Harrison Ford and Marilyn Monroe inhabit his creations. Their iconography is underpinned by the use of repetitive images of fellow superstars, such as Carrie Fisher and Christopher Reeve. Their stardom thus immortalized and shared in the same frame – an unsubtle dig at the perversity of world views such as ‘fame gives human life value’. He references larger-than-life personalities, who also suffer, highlighting the delusion of our materialistic society.
“Carrie Fisher holds a very special place in my heart. She was my first ever celebrity crush, which even at a young age, wasn't just determined by her physical beauty but rather her strength and determination to lead and fight for good as a key protagonist in the original Star Wars trilogy.” - Brad Novak
About Brad Novak
Brad Novak (aka New Blood Pop) is a leading urban artist whose work sits sharply at the nexus between fine art and street art. He is the first artist in NZ’s history to exhibit with global pop and street art superstars such as Warhol, Haring, Brainwash and BANKSY (Toronto, 2015). After showing in Toronto, New York, San Franscico and Manchester, Novak recently held a breakout solo show in Chicago with the coveted Vertical Gallery, and distinguished NZ artist Michael Smither chose Novak for his first ever 2-person portrait show. In 2024, Novak won the Eden Park Portraiture award. He is also still practicing (very much part-time) as a doctor, having specialized in Public Health Medicine.
