About this work
Inspired by Mr Quentin Tarantino’s celebrated 90’s cult movie ‘Reservoir Dogs’, Novak has grounded the famous opening scene uniquely within Aotearoa by using the Kiwi, Whio (Blue Duck), Spotted Shag, Tui, Huia, and Albatross. This comes from his self-titled series ‘Hybrids’. In this, Novak explores ‘identity’ through charismatic animals fusing with humans to create engaging hybrid figures. These works are a metaphor, mirroring Novak’s career and life journey.
“There is deeper meaning behind this pop art image... many of the birds of NZ are under threat (and some extinct) and that is something they have in common, much like their matching black and white suits.” - Brad Novak
About Brad Novak
Brad Novak (aka New Blood Pop) is a leading urban artist whose work sits sharply at the nexus between fine art and street art. He is the first artist in NZ’s history to exhibit with global pop and street art superstars such as Warhol, Haring, Brainwash and BANKSY (Toronto, 2015). After showing in Toronto, New York, San Franscico and Manchester, Novak recently held a breakout solo show in Chicago with the coveted Vertical Gallery, and distinguished NZ artist Michael Smither chose Novak for his first ever 2-person portrait show. In 2024, Novak won the Eden Park Portraiture award. He is also still practicing (very much part-time) as a doctor, having specialized in Public Health Medicine.
