About this work
"This artwork is an example of me indulging a passion that began in childhood. I’d hate to think of how many times my brothers and I watched the original Star Wars trilogy back growing up in the 80's. Best of all was episode 5 (the middle movie), the greatest sequel of all time, and my favourite movie ever… The Empire Strikes Back.
The scene depicted in this painting comes just as Luke prematurely leaves Yoda’s training to try to rescue his friends. I’ve captured this moment of suspense as Luke confronts Darth Vader for the first time. Not long after this first lightsabre fight, Vader tells Luke he is his father.
A major theme in my work for over a decade and a half has been my self-titled ‘Digital Dilemma’. I’m sure the move to a more technological future is hurting us in many ways. None more so than social media (ironic as I utilise the platform in my art career) - selfies, seeking others approval, disconnecting from what really matters.
Here, these two Stormtroopers can’t believe their luck. Vader is about to teach this Rebel a thing or two, as some Stormtroopers look on… 'Quick take a pic for our Instagram!'

About Brad Novak
Brad Novak (aka New Blood Pop) is a leading urban artist whose work sits sharply at the nexus between fine art and street art. He is the first artist in NZ’s history to exhibit with global pop and street art superstars such as Warhol, Haring, Brainwash and BANKSY (Toronto, 2015). After showing in Toronto, New York, San Franscico and Manchester, Novak recently held a breakout solo show in Chicago with the coveted Vertical Gallery, and distinguished NZ artist Michael Smither chose Novak for his first ever 2-person portrait show. In 2024, Novak won the Eden Park Portraiture award. He is also currently still practicing (very much part-time) as a doctor, having specialized in Public Health Medicine.
